License
TESSERACT is free software under the GNU Affero General Public License, v3. The full text is in the repository; this page is the short version of what it means for you.
What you can do
- Read all of it. Every line that runs on your machine is published. For something with this much access to your computer, that seems like the least it can offer.
- Run it, for anything. There is no personal-use clause and no seat count.
- Change it, and share what you changed. Fork it, strip out what you do not want, wire it to a model this repository has never heard of.
What the licence asks back
Only one thing, and it is the difference between the AGPL and the ordinary GPL: if you run a modified version as a service other people use over a network, those people are entitled to your source. Running your own modified copy on your own machine, privately, obliges you to nothing.
That clause is the reason for this licence rather than a permissive one. A local-first assistant that someone else can quietly turn into a closed hosted product, with your data going somewhere you cannot see, is the failure mode worth writing into the terms.

The licence text is authoritative. This page is a summary written for readers, not legal advice, and where the two disagree the licence wins.
TESSERACT is built from other people’s work and downloads more of it to your machine. Everything it uses, the speech models, the voices, the wake word, the search reranker and every software library, is listed with its own terms in NOTICE.md. One item there is worth reading before you rely on it commercially: the wake word model’s licence is unsettled, for reasons that page explains.
